CABARETCACCIA presents BULGARIAN SONG
KATE CONKLIN, soprano, is a leading interpreter of the highly ornamented vocal music of Bulgaria. For two years, Kate was the vocalist for Cirque du Soleil’s "O". She founded the acclaimed Bulgarian Vocal Ensembles at CalArts, and also served on voice faculty there for four years. Kate was a Fulbright Scholar to Bulgaria, where she rehearsed and performed as a member of the The Academic Folk Choir at the Plovdiv Academy of Music, developing her work in regional solo repertoire, choral literature, conducting and pedagogy. Last year Kate presented about her work in TEDx talk. She is currently in development with a solo performance piece, Recreational Science, written for her by Javier Navarrette (Oscar-nominated composer for Pan’s Labyrinth).
BRYAN LANDERS, banjoist and composer, has wielded his banjo in wide-ranging contexts, from North Indian music and the chamber music of George Crumb, to the beloved animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. Bryan has a BFA in Jazz Performance on banjo from the California Institute of the Arts, where he also focused on Indian, West African and Balkan music. While earning his degree, Bryan took a hiatus to tour and study with banjo legend Bill Keith, inventor of the melodic style technique, the world-famous Keith banjo tuner, and former member of Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys- the originators of Bluegrass music. After a stint touring, producing and recording in Nashville, Bryan returned to LA, composing music for film and television, and working as the music editor for the 'Reba' McEntire sitcom. Currently Bryan is preparing the first recording of his long-time collaboration with vocalist Kate Conklin.
